The correlation between skin and bone density

We know that loss of estrogen can accelerate skin aging and bone loss. There is evidence that the two process are related and likely due to the loss of collagen that occurs during the menopausal transition. There is an old study from 1965, yes you heard that right, which found a correlation between ‘Transparent skin and Osteoporosis.’ Why is this important? Because those whose skin ages faster appear to be at higher risk of osteoporosis. You can tell the health of one’s bones by looking at their skin!! This is further support by a study in 2011 entitled, ‘Severity of facial wrinkles may predict bone density in early menopause.’ This study finds that the worse a woman's skin wrinkles are during the first few years of menopause, the lower her bone density is.

One more take home from this talk.. there really is not enough evidence to support the use of oral collagen for support of bones, skin and hair. The best thing a woman can do to minimize collagen loss in the skin and bones is take HRT.

That said, if you enjoy it as a source of protein than go for it!
